In honor of the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s (NAEYC) Week of the Young Child (WOYC), Mayor Elicker reads to the city’s young children.

Mayor Elicker reads to the city’s young children.

Every year during the WOYC, we stop and recognize the value of childhood with a special focus on the needs of young children, their families, and those who support their growth and development. This opportunity for recognition is now more meaningful than ever. Families and early care and education programs have had to make difficult decisions in the past few weeks. WOYC is when we stop and say Thank You” for teaching and taking care of our children every day with a special appreciation to the educators, friends, and family who continue to nurture the children of health care professionals and all essential personnel.

In years past, fueled by the Connecticut Children’s Museum’s “Big Read,” the New Haven Early Childhood Council, and others, Mayors have opened the WOYC by reading to children. In the era of COVID-19, we continue the tradition with a few adaptations. We will close WOYC with the Mayor Elicker reading to our children, safely in their homes, via video. Please see the videos below of the Mayor reading Dreamers by Yuyi Morales (contributed by Creating Kids/Children’s Museum).
